Contrary to the traditional painting approach of adding paint to create a form, Lancelot Blondeel builds relief by concentrating material in certain points on the canvas. This technique developped in the “No Reason” series highlights the gestural element of the artist’s practice, which favors curved lines and vivid colors.
The preparation of the canvas, as well as the selection of colors, is a rigorous and carefully planned process. In contrast, the resulting form is the outcome of a spontaneous movement, drawn in just a few moments; the near-instantaneity of the gesture stands in opposition to the permanence of the canvas.
The use of bichromy is integrated into a simple composition. The work with washes applied in successive layers enhances the textural effects, creating an impression of depth. Finally, the relief is crafted to capture shadows and light, thus emphasizing the three-dimensional aspect.
